The future of cities from a global South perspective

The often bewildering array of urban and societal challenges facing humanity today cannot be answered within the confines of one discipline, or based on ideas from one part of the world.

This has been our guiding philosophy since Cityscapes Magazine was founded in 2010.

For the last decade, we have worked with a vast network of journalists, photographers, researchers, policymakers, and activists across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Our mission remains to tell the complex stories of what urban challenges from the ground up, as well as the nature and cost of real, sustainable, and equitable change.

For too long the status quo has failed to adequately engage with the extraordinary diversity of voices and ideas emerging from the global South— which is where we come in. We aim to encourage the emergence of a new cohort of urbanist and built-environment professionals whose thinking is not limited to dominant Western-leaning conceptions of what the contemporary city and future should be.

We continue to patiently build a platform that surfaces, connects and amplifies these voices, and ideas.
